These TikTok Trends Changed Fashion in 2020
What a year.
2020 has brought lots of ups and downs with many of these moments happening from our homes. One platform, in particular, made a major impact. Yes, we’re talking about TikTok. From whipped coffee, dances, and recipes to fashion, TikTok has been at the forefront of young people’s minds. TikTok has also been a major factor in their year’s fashion trends. Here are the top TikTok fashion trends that have taken over this year.
Loungewear
With lockdown and working from home, loungewear has become the new black. From matching sets, fuzzy sweatshirts, tie dye, ribbed, and printed, brands have been finding ways to make our everyday wardrobe chic and cozy.
Animal Print
Animal print is a fun way to spice up your wardrobe with some more statement pieces, which can be seen on any style influencer’s feed. Cow print, zebra print, leopard print, and snakeskin have all been popular options this year on dresses, shoes, or handbags. I’ve been loving animal print accessories like snakeskin boots or even a cow print phone case.
Leather
My favorite trend this year, and one that I have definitely taken part of, is leather. A leather jacket has always been a staple to add a bit of an edge to an outfit; however, this year leather has been looked at with more of a creative lens. This year, you could find “What I Wear in a Week” TikToks filled with leather in all forms including pants, blazers, skirts, joggers, and leggings.
The Shacket
A shirt + a jacket= a shacket. This is the perfect layering option for fall into winter with its versatile styling options. Lots of brands have introduced different styles, colors, fabrics, and patterns to hop on the trend that has taken over TikTok and Instagram feeds.
Straight Leg Jeans
Skinny jeans are officially no more. Living in sweatpants this year, I don’t see my legs being comfortable in tight clothes for a while. TikTok has seen a few pairs of straight leg jeans go viral. These are the perfect jeans to dress up or down, plus they are flattering on anyone thanks to a high waisted, looser fit that makes them both comfy and cute.
Sweater Vests
Another Instagram and Tiktok favorite of 2020 is the sweater vest. This is an unexpected but surprisingly stylish trend that I thought had died in the 80’s or 90’s. From houndstooth to argyle versions, sweater vests are a great layering option to throw on over a t-shirt, button down, or turtleneck for a fun pop of color.
Patchwork
The most popular pants on TikTok award goes to the patchwork jeans. These jeans started a trend of patchwork in a ton of different colors and styles. I bought a pair with black, white, and brown patches that are a super cute trendy pant for this winter! Patchwork is a such a fun way to add a statement piece into a look, from patchwork skirts or pants to even patchwork jackets.
Tennis Skirts
Last but not least, the tennis skirt. Tennis skirts are great to incorporate a more preppy style to your look paired with a sweatshirt or oversized t-shirt and chunky sneakers. I love watching all the TikTok styling videos where you can look more preppy, athletic, or girly depending on how you style the skirt.
From quarantine to the start of 2021, this year has been a whirlwind with so many changes but one of the best being the takeover of Tiktok and the fun fashion trends that emerged from all the influencers, brands and fashionistas this year. I hope 2021 will be a lot better than 2020 and one where we can hopefully wear and experience these trends!
