A fall wardrobe is not complete without a great pair of boots. As our sweltering days in the heat turn brisk, we stash away our buckle sandals and reach for something warm and leather.

While it’s tempting to add this season’s trending boots to our cart,  you may have some gems stowed away in your closet.

Today’s lesson in Fashion Education is crucial: everything that’s old, turns new again. As we look to the previous trending and classic boots, we learn the importance of longevity.

With combined style history and proven longevity, these five boots are sure to earn a spot in your closet if they’re not in there already!

Combat Boots

As both a cultural symbol and music genre icon, combat boots were made for the bold.

The instantly recognizable Dr. Martens made their debut in 1960. Quickly, the boots took on an identity of its own, as they were adopted by the youth rebellion movement. Later, combat boots morphed into a symbol of punk music during the 1980s and 1990s.

In the realm of fashion, Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis Spring 1993 show, notorious for its controversy in Jacobs’ instant firing, showcased a unique, patent leather style of Dr. Martens on the runway. Most recent fashion revivals of the iconic boots include Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2018, Prada Fall/Winter 2019, and Ann Demeulemeester Fall/Winter 2019, just to name a few.

Making it on must-have shoe lists consecutively year after year, combat boots show no signs of going anywhere.

Cowboy Boots

The western trend has been on our radar since the latter half of the 2010s. This year, the trend has reached new heights with cow-print replacing the beloved leopard-print, fringe accents, and of course, cowboy boots. With celebrities like Lil Nas X and Kasey Musgraves bringing country music to mainstream audiences, it’s no wonder why we’re riding the yeehaw wave.

The ‘Out West’ aesthetic had its humble beginnings in fashion with the help of Ralph Lauren. He found an appreciation for the Americana aesthetic and incorporated many western, ‘cowboy’ inspired styles into his designs and ad campaigns.

Cowboy boots made their way to the runway with Alexander McQueen for Givenchy Spring 98 show, where he re-interpreted iconic Western motifs like leather chaps and fringe. Fast forward ten years, cowboy boots appeared in runway shows from Isabel Marant and Calvin Klein to Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and most recently Schiaparelli’s Couture Spring 19 show

Now back and better than ever, cowboy boots are oddly proving to be one of the most versatile shoes you can buy. From broad-squared toed to pointed and tall to mid-calf to ankle, the variety of cowboy boots are endless, so you’re guaranteed to find one that suits your style.

Slouchy Boots

Gravity defying and effortlessly chic, slouchy boots are an absolute must-have. It seems like just yesterday we were all drooling over Saint Laurent’s diamond-encrusted boots for Fall 2017, which were soon coveted by style icon Rihanna. Notably, that same season, Marc Jacobs, Ulla Johnson, and Isabel Marant showed their own renditions. Ruched and bunched either at the ankle or the boot, in leather to suede, slouchy boots were all the rage.

Slouchy knee-high boots have certainly evolved into a classic. Worn over or under trousers for a sleek appeal or mix with a long silky skirt or dress for the perfect fall evening outfit.

Chelsea Boots

The tried and true Chelsea boots are essential in both men’s and women’s closets.

Initially designed for Queen Victoria in 1851, the Chelsea boots were made for easy to wear, slip on and off function, with the impressive invention of elastic. Paddock boots, as they were frequently referred to, were known as the ‘walking shoes’ for men and women. Through their evolution in fashion, Chelsea boots peaked in popularity during the Mod-era. Famous British bands including The Rolling Stones and the Beatles could be seen rocking out in their Chelsea boots.

While their flat sole and grab-and-go functionality made Chelsea boots a classic, the style has seen many facelifts within the last few years. Chelsea boots dominated the Fall/Winter 2019  runway from their clunky, heavy-soles from Tibi and Bottega Veneta to Todd’s textured patent leather.

Simple and practical, the Chelsea boots are a staple that continue to evolve season to season.

Weather Resistant Boots

Practicality doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish. Fall weather can be extremely unpredictable with dreaded chilly rain and slushy snow. Finding boots that can withstand pesky conditions is essential.

Many of my favorite designers and luxury brands found a balance of comfort and versatility with their weatherproof designs. For her Autumn/Winter 2019 show, Stella McCartney re-interpreted the iconic Hunter boots with a sustainable twist. According to the website’s listing, the staple water-resistant boots were made of natural rubber ‘sourced from certified, sustainably-managed forests in Guatemala, meaning that no deforestation occurs and that the social and economic welfare of workers and local communities are protected.’

Stella McCartney isn’t the only designer to dabble in utility boots. From a traditional patent leather rain boot from Jimmy Choo to the ultra-modern grip proof Moncler ankle boots, there are multiple designs and functions ready to weather any storm.
