What It’s Like Working For A Florist
Everyone loves receiving a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers for a special occasion, or just because. But, not many people know the art and design aspects behind the craft. I got the chance to talk to my friend, Amy, about interning for a floral design company in order to get all the insider info on how those beautiful bouquets and centerpieces actually come together.
How did you become interested in floral design?
I’ve always been a creative person in art classes – I’m very in touch with my creative side -- and I’m also very hands-on. My mom loves flowers; she goes out for fresh flowers every week for the house and that brought me to love having them around.
Did you garden growing up?
I gardened with my grandma each spring growing up. My mom always has a garden in the backyard, and so do all my family members, so it’s familiar to me. My mom has always picked out the backyard landscaping by hand, so her florals are always a beautiful touch.
What’s your favorite flower?
My favorite flowers are peonies. Tulips are a close second, though. I want them in my wedding bouquet one day.
When did you intern with the floral designer?
I interned with her during my senior year of high school. I know, it was a while back, but I love the lessons it taught me, and it’s dictated what I want to do with my life.
What lessons has it taught you?
It taught me to value hard work, and it sharpened my eye for detail. It also made me more open-minded, and more willing to try new opportunities.
What was the most challenging part about your internship?
My mentor had never had an intern before, so that was a challenge within itself. Not every flower looks the same, so you need to get over the fact that the arrangements are individual, and that none of them will be absolutely perfect.
What was the most fun part about your internship?
I loved seeing what I worked on, the physical arrangement, come to life at someone’s real wedding. I also loved playing with the flowers and arranging them in different ways -- that was fun.
Would you consider this career path?
Yes, definitely – very heavily. I get to use my creativity to make someone else happy. I got to meet with brides and sit in on interviews with the bride, and it was amazing seeing how excited they were.
