Travel Tips: What To Expect When Getting on a Plane
Traveling during a global pandemic is probably not the first thing on your to-do list. Despite that fact, there may come a time soon when you find yourself on a plane for one reason or another. And, to ensure you and everyone around you is safe, preparation is key. Based on my own travel experience during this time, I want to share my tips on what to bring, wear, and expect when flying.
What to bring:
Mask – the new essential accessory for us all! My fiancé in medical school suggests wearing a mask where you can change the filter to be extra cautious.
Hand sanitizer – I think this goes without saying. You’ll definitely need to bring a travel size bottle of hand sanitizer and continuously use it after you touch anything in the airport or plane.
Wipes – You may feel a bit neurotic for wiping things down before you sit, but better safe than sorry!
Gloves – I never actually used my gloves, but bringing a pair just in case can only serve you well.
Water bottle – bring your own water bottle just in case you don’t feel comfortable using a cup or bottle that a flight attendant provides. You just don’t know how anxious you’ll feel when flying for the first time.
Snacks – depending on where you are traveling to and from, some restaurants and shops may not be open. Prepare by bringing some fueling snacks that you can eat throughout your travel day.
What to wear:
Comfortable clothes that are easy to wash -- You’ll want to strip all the clothes that you wore on the plane as soon as you can, so wear something that you know you can wash.
Wear layers – I always wear layers when traveling, but I think this tip still applies today.
Hair up – I put my hair in a low braid when I traveled so it was out of my face and I didn’t have to bring my hands anywhere near my eyes or nose. It’s better if it’s up and out of the way!
What to expect:
You need to wear your mask at all times – get ready to be wearing that mask 24/7. You can take it off to eat or drink water though!
Not many snacks on the flight – I was handed a single water bottle and a paper bag of a few snacks for my flight. Don’t expect that you can buy anything in-flight during this time, drinks included.
Everyone is at a different comfort level – expect to see a range of caution at the airport. I saw someone in a full blown hazmat suit! People are going to have different levels of comfort at a time like this, but don’t let that scare you. Just follow the rules and you’ll be fine.
There is a new normal with travel, like everything else in today’s world. With preparation, you can help ease your anxiety and encourage others to also be safe. Share your tips with friends so that we can all learn from each other about how to travel safely.
