Trend Report: Copenhagen Fashion Week SS21

The Spring/Summer 2021 season has officially begun! Copenhagen Fashion Week kicked things off, running from August 9th to August 12th. I’m recapping all of the highlights from the inevitably iconic Scandi showcase, from need-to-know trends to fabulous street style fads.

Check out my top five here.

#1: Light Neutrals

Mark Kenly Domino Tan absolutely killed this one. Through the primary use of white, gray and beige tones, the designer has created clothing that is ageless and elegant. A neutral color palette allows for more creativity with shapes, textures and overall aesthetics. These shades were also seen within other designers’ collections as well as on the streets.

#2: Versatile Silhouettes

Unique tailoring has long been an attractive highlight at the Copenhagen Fashion Week shows, and this year certainly did not disappoint. Boxy tops and cinched waist bands were a common theme in the Baum Und Pferdgarten SS21 collection, while Stine Goya displayed a significant array of artfully designed dresses and pantsuits, featuring unique drapery and stitching, asymmetrical hemlines and vibrant geometric patterns. Among my favorite collections was Remain, who released a collection of incredibly cool and unique pieces. The Remain SS21 collection maintains the clean-cut lines, significant of Scandi style, while incorporating eye-catching colored leathers, flirty open-back dresses and crops.

#3: Comfort

Light, airy pieces flitted across the runways of Copenhagen. Rabens Saloner included multiple knit and linen co-ords and bright, whimsical tie-dye prints while maintaining her signature elegance, and Rixo debuted her collections for the first time in Copenhagen Fashion Week, showing light and airy dresses (on the less expensive end of couture) that are perfect pieces to take from day to night. Attendees also seemed to jump on the comfort trend this season, sporting lounge sets and relaxed silhouettes.

#4: Ageless Minimalism

Both Nynne, an up-and-coming Danish label, and By Malene Birger, a CFW veteran, executed this trend flawlessly on the runway. Nynne’s SS21 show featured silhouettes that were simple and to the point, including oversized trench coats, oversized tops and long dresses with ruching at the waistline. Subtle feminine flair was added to many pieces in the form of puff sleeves and pastels. The classic Scandi brand By Malene Birger found a new focus this season, as they avoid overly-complex designs and rather focus on wearability. Also fitting the previously mentioned comfort trend, By Malene Birger debuted a line of practical loungewear.

#5: Sustainable Fashion

I use the term “trend” loosely with this one, as sustainable fashion doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon - if ever. I am happy to report that several designers upheld sustainable practices in the production of their SS21 collections, among them being Ganni, Designers Remix and Rodebjer, to name a few. Ganni demonstrated their commitment to responsible production through the use of organic materials, while Designers Remix went all-in, displaying an entire collection made from upcycled pieces from past collections. Their goal was to portray how fashion can be given a new life, which was effortlessly communicated through the fun and unique silhouettes shown in the SS21 collection. Last but absolutely not least, Rodebjer made use of mostly recycled and organic materials to produce a collection that seemed to have a mix of everything. Rodebjer showcased both neutral hues and artistic prints as well as comfy co-ords.
