Island Feature: Morning Glory Farm
Morning Glory Farm is a family-owned farm that has existed on Martha’s Vineyard since 1975. They grow vegetables, fruit, and flowers, and also raise cattle and other animals to produce eggs, milk, and meat in a sustainable and responsible way. They sell all of these products at the Morning Glory Farmstand in Edgartown. It is one of my favorite places to buy a bouquet of flowers, local fruit, vegetables, and cheese, as well as pick up fresh baked goods. Morning Glory is a special place with delicious products.
I stopped at the farmstand to pick up fresh ingredients for one of my favorite summer salads. I got farm-grown lettuce, local goat cheese, a lime, lemon, orange, and grapefruit. I also bought one of the farmstand’s extra special peaches, that cost $8 each. Yes...each!!! This is definitely a special treat that I buy only once per summer. Here’s how I used it in my salad:
2 heads of lettuce, washed and cut
1 large peach, thinly sliced
½-1 brick of goat cheese
2 tbsp juice from an orange
2 tbsp juice from a lemon
2 tbsp juice from a lime
2 tbsp juice from a grapefruit
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
I mix all of the citrus juices together with olive oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar to create a citrus vinaigrette, and pour that over the lettuce, peach, and goat cheese. This is a fresh summer salad, and the ingredients are local, thanks to MoGlo. Be sure to visit Morning Glory Farm if you happen to be on the Vineyard!
