Makeup: A Simple Treat in Trying Times
Are you one to go full glam with your makeup when you are getting ready to go out, or do you prefer more of a natural look, where no one would notice if you’re wearing makeup at all?
I like to do both — depending on my mood and where I’m going. I wear makeup in a variety of ways, and I usually sport a happy medium. For me, the act of putting on makeup boosts my self-confidence. Putting on makeup can naturally boost my mood, and it can also make me feel a touch more put together when I’m going out for the night.
For me, it’s a treat to put on a fabulous new mascara. I love the thrill of picking up a new brand. I’ve tried Le Volume de Chanel, a few from Benefit and Maybelline — all equally as good. I don’t have a trusty one that I use consistently, I just usually love to change it up. I do wear only black mascara. However, I know people who wear neutral brown, or they shake it up with blue. To me, there is such joy in swiping on a fresh coat that can perfectly finish any look.

Aside from the joys that come with putting on a fresh face of makeup, it can also serve as a creative outlet for many. While I am no aficionado in changing up my makeup looks, I thoroughly enjoy seeing how countless beauty influencers (and the artists at Sephora) apply makeup. Their finished work is a true art form in my eyes; it takes a steady hand, skill, knowledge of what look a client is going for, and a ton of creativity.
I like to take my time when applying my makeup before a day out. After all, it’s a person’s face that first connects you to another person. While I have a boyfriend who will compliment me with or without makeup, I love the feeling of putting on makeup to make myself happy. At the end of the day, the most important thing to do is what makes you feel most confident.
To me, it’s the act of self-care that’s important: whether you are buying and trying a new makeup product, or you are using a new product to freshly scrub your face before a night of restful sleep. It’s all about doing what makes you feel your best.
Lastly, putting on makeup puts me in touch with my feminine side. Right now, due to the pandemic, the majority of my classes are online. Because of this, I am in sweatpants around my townhouse most times of the day. This doesn’t change my routine of trying to look good, feel good, and do good. I put on makeup whether the class meets in person or online, whether the camera is on or off. It just makes me like myself.
During these trying times, I hope everyone can slow down and find life’s simple pleasures. For me, putting on makeup is one of them. Maybe it’s yours too?
